Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has declared that his belief in the club’s innocence remains unshaken, even after a recent ruling found them guilty of violating several Premier League financial regulations. The case centers on accusations that the club inflated sponsorship income from affiliated organizations and facilitated undisclosed, off-the-books payments designed to bypass existing financial standards. Centring around claims they inflated sponsorship revenue from connected companies and made other “off the books” payments to circumvent financial regulations, city were accused of a wide range of rule breaches.
Following an announcement on Friday that the club was found guilty of a majority of the 115 charges brought against them, Al Mubarak addressed the club’s supporters in an open letter posted to the official website. He noted that he, like many staff and fans, has spent time responding to inquiries from colleagues and family members regarding the situation. He emphasized to his own family that the legal process still has significant ground to cover, reaffirming that the club’s resolve to clear its name is as firm now as it was when the investigation commenced.
Although Al Mubarak expressed a desire to elaborate on why the organization feels confident in its defense, he noted that the strict confidentiality requirements of the ongoing legal proceedings prevent him from sharing further details. The letter itself underwent multiple legal reviews to ensure compliance with these regulations. While the club is expected to lodge an appeal, other Premier League teams are reportedly seeking legal counsel to explore potential compensation claims related to the infractions.
