In only his second season in Formula 1, Kimi Antonelli has etched his name into the history books by becoming the youngest world champion the sport has ever seen. The 20-year-old clinched the title during the Mexico City Grand Prix, crossing the finish line in third place to cement an extraordinary campaign.
Antonelli, who was 20 years and 68 days old at the time of his triumph, shattered the previous age record held by Sebastian Vettel by three years and 67 days. Furthermore, he stands as the first Italian driver to secure the world title since Alberto Ascari achieved the feat back in 1953.
The race itself proved to be a challenging test of composure for the young champion. It was interrupted by a red flag, which set the stage for a tense 25-lap sprint to the finish. Amidst the chaos and pressure, Antonelli maintained a steady drive, earning a podium spot behind race winner Max Verstappen of Red Bull and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. Antonelli drove a composed race amid some hectic action involving the other front-runners in a grand prix interrupted by a red flag that led to a 25-lap sprint to the finish.
Overcome with emotion, an overwhelmed Antonelli struggled to speak on the team radio when first informed of his championship victory. Between tears and laughter, he eventually managed to express his gratitude, stating, “Thank you so much. We did it. We did it.”
The Grand Prix also highlighted mounting friction within the Ferrari garage.
Tensions flared between Lewis Hamilton and team-mate Charles Leclerc, particularly following Leclerc’s aggressive maneuvering on the opening lap. Hamilton, who spent the closing stages of the race attempting to bridge the gap to Verstappen, expressed significant frustration after contact at the first chicane hindered his chances of victory.
For Max Verstappen, the Mexico City result marked his third win in the last four races, capitalizing effectively on the internal conflicts of his rivals. While the Ferrari battle served as a dramatic subplot, the day ultimately belonged to Antonelli, whose dominant season has seen him claim the world championship with several races still remaining on the calendar.
