Following a masterful performance at the Dutch Grand Prix, Lando Norris has climbed to fourth in the drivers’ standings. Despite securing back-to-back victories—starting with his maiden win in Hungary last month and continuing with his triumph at Zandvoort—the McLaren driver insists he and his team still lack the necessary machinery to sustain a legitimate championship fight.
The victory at the final Zandvoort race has narrowed the gap to the championship leader, Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, to 83 points. Norris successfully overtook Antonelli on track after a chaotic start to the race. Currently, Antonelli holds the lead, while his teammate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton are tied for second, trailing the Italian by 59 points.
This performance has drawn comparisons to Max Verstappen’s historic comeback against Norris last season. At this same point last year, Oscar Piastri held a 34-point advantage over Norris and a 104-point lead over Verstappen. Despite that deficit, Verstappen mounted an extraordinary recovery to win the title in Abu Dhabi, finishing just two points ahead of the Briton. Whether Norris can replicate such a turnaround remains the central question as the second half of the season progresses. The report also notes that despite a second consecutive win to open the second half of the Formula 1 season, lando Norris says he and McLaren “don’t have the car I need to fight for a championship”.
