Missouri offensive tackle Johnnie “DJ” Jones has undergone a successful heart transplant. Head coach Eli Drinkwitz confirmed on Thursday that the 18-year-old freshman is currently in recovery following the procedure, which took place on Wednesday.
The medical discovery began during routine intake testing over the summer, when team staff identified a potential issue with Jones’ heart. Seeking clarity, Missouri’s medical team consulted specialists at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, after two weeks of observation failed to provide conclusive answers. Doctors at the clinic subsequently diagnosed a severe heart condition, and the coaching staff was informed last week that a transplant was necessary for the student-athlete.
Drinkwitz publicly shared his gratitude for the medical personnel involved in the surgery, as well as the donor and their family. “We are incredibly grateful for the medical team who cared for DJ and for the donor and donor family whose extraordinary gift made this possible,” the coach stated in his announcement.
Before joining the Missouri program as a four-star recruit, Jones was a standout player at Venice High School on Florida’s Gulf Coast. He had been hospitalized at the Mayo Clinic while awaiting the life-saving operation.
