Argentine President Javier Milei has officially called on the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to facilitate the return of Formula One to Argentina. Speaking at the FIA’s American Congress in Buenos Aires on Monday, the President emphasized that the nation is restoring the institutional stability necessary to host premier global racing events once again.
Argentina boasts a deep-rooted motorsport heritage, most notably highlighted by the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio, who secured five world championships between 1951 and 1957. The country hosted approximately 20 Grand Prix races starting in the 1950s, with the final event taking place in 1998. Public enthusiasm for the sport remains high, evidenced by an exhibition race last April featuring Alpine driver Franco Colapinto, which attracted nearly half a million spectators to a temporary four-kilometre circuit in the capital.
Milei expressed a clear desire to see the young driver compete on home soil, stating, “We want to see Colapinto (race) in this country.” To support these ambitions, the city is currently investing $100 million into the Oscar and Juan Galvez Circuit. Named after iconic racers from the mid-20th century, the facility is undergoing extensive renovations, including the construction of a new track and upgraded grandstands designed to meet the requirements for both F1 and motorcycle Grand Prix events.
City officials confirmed that the modernization project is well underway and is scheduled for completion by early 2027. By combining this significant infrastructure investment with the country’s historic passion for racing, the government aims to re-establish Argentina as a key destination on the international motorsport calendar.
