Chicago Kingsmen clinched their second Minor League Cricket championship in three years after a thrilling three-wicket victory over the Baltimore Royals on Sunday. The win was anchored by an exceptional all-round display from Tajinder Singh Dhillon, who followed up a crucial three-wicket haul with the ball by smashing an unbeaten 69 from just 33 deliveries. But what followed was an emphatic demonstration of their collective strength, the Kingsmen’s campaign had begun with a defeat in their opening fixture.
Facing a target of 179, the Kingsmen found themselves in a high-pressure situation when Dhillon arrived at the crease with his team requiring 97 runs off the final 58 balls. Chasing 179, Kingsmen were faced with a delicately poised contest when Dhillon walked out with 97 required off 58 deliveries.
Baltimore’s lineup featured experienced spin specialists, including former IPL player Sarabjit Ladda and USA international Mohammad Mohsin, both of whom were expected to dictate the middle overs. However, Dhillon immediately neutralized their impact. He attacked Ladda in the 13th over, hitting a six and a four, and later dismantled Mohsin’s bowling in the 15th over with a flurry of boundaries. Giving them every reason to believe they could squeeze the chase through the middle overs, baltimore still had the considerable experience of USA legspinner Mohammad Mohsin and former IPL legspinner Sarabjit Ladda to call upon.
The defining moment of the final occurred during the 18th over, as Dhillon took on all-rounder Tanush Apte. By hammering two consecutive sixes and finishing the over with a boundary, Dhillon scored 20 runs, effectively reducing the target to a mere eight runs off the final two overs. Although Rishi Dhawan picked up three quick wickets in the 19th over to create a momentary stir, Dhillon stayed composed to guide his team across the finish line. Effectively extinguishing Baltimore’s hopes of mounting a late comeback, the 20-run over reduced Chicago’s equation to a mere eight runs from the final 12 deliveries. The late wickets amounted to little more than artificial excitement as Kingsmen eventually crossed the line to regain the trophy they had first won in 2024, but with Dhillon standing unbeaten at the other end. Sunday’s final was therefore not an isolated burst of brilliance but the latest instalment of a sustained purple patch that has seen Dhillon emerge as a match-winner for three different franchises over the course of a few months.
Earlier in the day, Dhillon proved equally vital as a bowler, taking three for 29. His efforts were instrumental in restricting the Baltimore Royals to 178 runs, preventing what looked to be a looming surge toward a 200-plus total. This performance earned him the Player of the Match honors and highlighted his growth into one of the most reliable finishers in the American franchise cricket scene. A total that offered their accomplished bowling attack a fighting chance but ultimately proved insufficient, the Royals eventually had to settle for 178. The innings ultimately proved decisive in a 17-run victory and earned him the Player of the Match award. His exploits should make him one of the most prized domestic commodities when MI New York sit down to deliberate their retentions ahead of the next MLC season.
Dhillon’s success this summer extended beyond the MiLC, where he finished as the leading run-scorer with 338 runs across eight innings at a strike rate of 167. His versatility was also evident in his time with MI New York, where he combined with Kieron Pollard for a match-turning 80-run partnership against the Seattle Orcas. Reeling at 73 for five, Dhillon blasted an unbeaten 66 off 27 balls to steer his side to victory. Despite predominantly occupying the difficult finishing positions, Dhillon topped the MiLC run-scoring charts with 338 runs in eight innings at a blistering strike rate of 167.
His consistent form carried over to the Caribbean as well. Signing as a replacement player for the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, he hit a match-winning 62 off 37 balls in his CPL debut against the Jamaica Kingsmen, securing a last-ball win. These repeated high-pressure performances have firmly established him as a premier middle-order talent. Allowing Kingsmen to retain control of the chase without the rest of the batsmen needing to gamble excessively against Baltimore’s two premier spin options, the calculated aggression ensured that the required rate never climbed beyond ten and a half.
Given his rare ability to attack spin bowling from the first delivery and his reputation as an elite power-hitter, Dhillon is now being touted as a strong candidate for a role in the USA T20I middle order. While he was overlooked in the most recent ILT20 auction, his recent heroics have solidified his status as a critical asset for future franchise drafting, particularly for MI New York as they look to build on their squad, which includes established names like Milind Kumar, Syed Saad Ali, and Hassan Khan. But Dhillon, enjoying a remarkable summer across three franchise competitions, turned the contest decisively in Chicago’s favour with another breathtaking exhibition of middle-order power-hitting. Where opportunities to build substantial scores are often limited and the margin for error considerably smaller, that performance was particularly significant for a batter entrusted with the unenviable task of rescuing an innings from the lower middle order. It is a department that has often lacked the kind of uninhibited strokeplay and immediate acceleration Dhillon brings to the table. Armed with arguably the most formidable roster in the competition, Chicago entered the tournament among the overwhelming favourites.
