Chelsea have officially announced the signing of veteran England midfielder Jordan Henderson from Premier League rivals Brentford. The 36-year-old, who was part of England’s World Cup squad at the recent tournament in North America, has signed a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge.
Henderson, a former Liverpool captain who won both the Premier League and Champions League at Anfield, left the club for Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in 2023 before moving to Ajax just six months later. He subsequently returned to the Premier League with Brentford last year, though his contract was terminated last week once Chelsea’s interest became public.
Reflecting on his move, Henderson said, “Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down.” He also noted his admiration for the ownership’s ambition, adding, “For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
The midfielder, who has earned 91 international caps, was part of England’s 2026 World Cup squad. He played only a handful of minutes during the tournament and suffered a broken arm later in the competition.
Henderson joins Xabi Alonso’s squad shortly after the club secured veteran Danny Welbeck from Brighton. These additions follow a busy transfer window for the Blues, who spent a British-record £117 million ($157 million) to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, alongside the arrivals of defender Maxence Lacroix and Atalanta’s Marco Palestra.
Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, sitting one point and one place behind Brentford, and ultimately failed to qualify for European competition. Alonso’s side is now preparing for their Premier League opener against Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24.
