Manchester United manager Michael Carrick insists he does not need reassurances from club officials regarding his position, acknowledging that securing victories is the sole method to alleviate pressure. The Red Devils prepare for a Champions League encounter against Italian side Como on Wednesday following a difficult stretch that has yielded just two victories from 10 matches across all competitions this season.
United are enduring their worst start to an English top-flight campaign in four decades. Their recent struggles include a League Cup elimination by Brighton last month and a decisive defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last week. Carrick secured the permanent managerial role in May following a successful stint as interim boss earlier in the year, yet he has quickly become the latest figure to face scrutiny at Old Trafford since Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013. Having been knocked out of the League Cup by Brighton last month and comfortably beaten by Atletico Madrid last week in the Champ, the Red Devils are off to their worst start to an English top-flight campaign in 40 years.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Italy, Carrick emphasized his understanding of the position. He noted that winning matches is necessary for everything to function properly and stated that he requires no outside guidance to recognize the team’s current needs. “I know we’ve got to win football games for everything to flow and everything to fit into place. That’s the great thing about it; we can do something about it,” Carrick told his pre-match news conference in Italy.
Compounding the team’s difficulties is a mounting injury list that has hindered Carrick’s efforts to reverse their fortunes. Lisandro Martinez managed to start Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds despite previously criticizing the club’s transfer inactivity following the loss to Atletico, but he was substituted at halftime.
The Argentine defender is ruled out of the upcoming trip to Como alongside six teammates. Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu, and Ayden Heaven are also unavailable for selection.
