Hardik Pandya Trade Talks Intensify; MI Reject Suryakumar Yadav Swap

Trade discussions surrounding Hardik Pandya have reached a decisive phase, with potential moves involving the Mumbai Indians captain gaining momentum. While speculation had linked Suryakumar Yadav to a possible exchange, the Mumbai Indians hierarchy has definitively ruled out any such move. Addressing the rumors, MI sources stated, “SKY is not up for trade, and there have been no discussions, nor will there be.” PBKS sources, too, have remained tightlipped but they did not try to deny the possibility of a barter of their ace pacer with the MI captain of the last three seasons.

Despite a modest return of 270 runs across 13 matches during the previous season, Pandya showcased his impact in the 2025 campaign by scoring 717 runs in 16 games. Meanwhile, the franchise is shifting its focus toward strengthening its bowling department. The team is reportedly in the market for a high-caliber pace bowler, especially following underwhelming performances from Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar. Boult secured only two wickets in five matches, while Chahar tallied eight wickets in eight games last season and 11 scalps in 14 outings in 2025. However, the franchise has about two weeks to take that call.

Arshdeep Singh, who leads India’s T20I pace attack when Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable, has emerged as a logical fit for Mumbai’s requirements. While MI remains non-committal, discussions regarding a potential swap for the Punjab Kings pacer have taken place. Punjab management has requested additional time to evaluate the offer, with officials expected to reach a conclusion within the next 48 hours. A move to Punjab presents tactical uncertainty for Pandya, as Shreyas Iyer currently holds the captaincy there, whereas a potential move to the Rajasthan Royals could offer the leadership role. However, a decision may not be too far away, with the next 48 hours likely to be crucial. Although that is not to suggest that MI have sought the England pacer, it is unlikely that Rajasthan Royals would consider discussing Jofra Archer. Most of them are likely to feature in the playing XI.

Rajasthan Royals have also entered the conversation, with names like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi surfacing. However, Mumbai Indians appear uninterested in proposals that lack a front-line fast bowler. While there were earlier discussions with the Kolkata Knight Riders regarding Harshit Rana, the Knight Riders were unwilling to release their pacer. MI is not lacking in batting depth, boasting a lineup that includes Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton, Tilak Varma, Sherfane Rutherford, Naman Dhir, Will Jacks, and Mitchell Santner, which explains the lack of interest in pursuing players like Chennai Super Kings’ Ayush Mhatre.

The five-time champions are currently evaluating their roster, and a decision on releasing underperforming bowlers like Trent Boult may occur within the next fortnight. For now, the focus remains on the complex three-way trade dynamics as the franchise looks to recalibrate its squad for the upcoming season. Particularly the New Zealander, it would therefore not be a surprise if the five-time champions decide to release one of them.
