Following a triumphant World Cup campaign, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is moving to secure the future of head coach Luis de la Fuente. Although the 65-year-old manager is currently under contract until 2028, the federation has officially begun the process of extending his tenure through the 2030 World Cup. RFEF President Rafael Lujan confirmed the development, stating that the federation is actively working to ensure the coach remains at the helm for the upcoming global tournament, which he considers vital for the national team’s trajectory.
Lujan praised the coach’s impact, noting that his humility and dedication have been the driving forces behind Spain’s recent historic achievements. “I believe Luis deserves this, and we are working toward it,” Lujan remarked. “While his current deal runs until 2028, we are initiating discussions now to extend that commitment to 2030 or beyond, as his presence on the world stage is essential.” Spain is set to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco, and the nation is also aggressively bidding to host the tournament’s final match.
With the World Cup success behind them, De la Fuente is now shifting his focus toward the upcoming season. His primary objective is to maintain the momentum of a squad balanced with both emerging talent and seasoned veterans. The team is preparing for their UEFA Nations League title defense, which begins next month with high-stakes matches against England and Croatia.
