George Russell achieved his third victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, marking a significant return to form. The Mercedes driver successfully held off Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in one of the tightest finishes in the sport’s history. This win serves as his first triumph since late June, ending a seven-race drought that had persisted throughout a challenging phase of the championship.
Reflecting on the achievement, Russell described the victory as a form of vindication, stating that he has finally “come through the other side” of a difficult period. Having entered the year as a championship favorite, he had previously watched his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, dominate with eight total wins, including three during the same span Russell struggled. The current result provides a much-needed momentum shift for the British driver.
The points dynamic has shifted as a result of the weekend, with the gap between Russell and Antonelli narrowing to 66 points. While the margin remains substantial with only seven or eight races remaining, it represents a notable improvement over the 81-point deficit Russell faced prior to arriving in Baku. Antonelli finished in fifth place, an outing he candidly labeled as his “worst weekend of the year in terms of performance.” With either seven or eight races still to go, and 25 points for a win, that’s still huge.
Addressing the title fight, Russell acknowledged his teammate’s consistent excellence this season but emphasized that the competition is entering a critical phase. “My team-mate’s had an incredible season; he’s been pretty flawless throughout, but now we’re getting to crunch time,” he noted. Russell added that he intends to remain focused solely on his own driving, maintaining that delivering high-level performances will satisfy him regardless of the final outcome.
The scheduling of the Grand Prix, which occurred 24 hours earlier than the traditional Sunday slot, proved fitting for a driver frequently referred to as ‘Mr Saturday’ due to his consistent prowess in qualifying sessions. This win now forces a recalculation of the championship standing as the season enters its final chapter.
